In 1892, the physician and medical administrator Simon Flexner began research on cerebrospinal meningitis, a meningococcal disease with an untreated mortality rate between 70 and 90%. Theodore Brevard Hayne was born on August 3, 1898 to Dr. and Mrs. James Adams Hayne in Blackstock, South Carolina. As a child Theodore attended school in Washington D.C., Greenville, South Carolina, and in Panama where his father worked. At the age of twelve Theodore attended The Porter Military College for four years and later attended The Citadel from which he graduated in 1920.
