In 1892, the physician and medical administrator Simon Flexner began research on cerebrospinal meningitis, a meningococcal disease with an untreated mortality rate between 70 and 90%. Theodore Brevard Hayne was born on August 3, 1898 to Dr. and Mrs. James Adams Hayne in Blackstock, South Carolina. As a child Theodore attended school in Washington D.C., Greenville, South Carolina, and in Panama where his father worked.
